It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday sabong
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream sabong
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been sabong better off staying put sabong
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a sabong footballing perspective sabong
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford sabong
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane sabong
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence sabong
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted sabong
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity sabong
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources sabong between the clubs sabong
Hojlund is proof of it sabong
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire sabong
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators sabong
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence sabong
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him sabong
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others sabong
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland sabong
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much sabong
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness sabong
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball sabong

When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break sabong
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control sabong
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing sabong
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line sabong
Neither winger is a crosser sabong
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot sabong
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier sabong
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 sabong
But United had more sabong footballing craft with Eriksen on sabong
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal sabong
He has got a wiry strength sabong
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace sabong
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead sabong
The raw materials are there sabong
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong sabong

He never scored in the Danish Superliga sabong
He has not struck in the Premier League, either: outscored by Diogo Dalot on domestic duty, his goals have been confined to Europe sabong
Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray sabong
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage sabong
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas sabong

Emma Finucane is trying to ignore her new status as sprint world champion as she sets her sights on achieving Olympic glory in Paris next summer sabong
The 20-year-old Welshwoman shocked herself when she took the women’s individual sprint title in Glasgow in August, beating Germany’s favoured Lea Friedrich in the final sabong
Finucane donned the rainbow jersey for the first time in competition at the UCI Track Champions League opening round in Mallorca this weekend, but while the distinctive striped jersey means she can no longer keep herself inconspicuous, she does not want it to change her approach sabong
“People will look at me now,” Finucane told the PA news agency sabong
“Last year I was kind of the underdog and I just came through so now I am wearing the stripes sabong
I hope that doesn’t really change anything sabong
“I’m just trying to ignore it and just race my bike, but there is some external pressure sabong
I’m not just Emma at the back of the field anymore sabong
”The rainbow jersey can do different things for different riders sabong
While many take it as a confidence boost, for others the stripes have worn heavily sabong
Finucane said she had spoken to several Great Britain team-mates about how to deal with it sabong
“I don’t want to look at it (as giving me a psychological edge) because if I lose, then what?” she said sabong
“And I will get beaten, and that’s fine sabong
I just need to take it as it comes sabong
“Half of it is the mental battle of putting it on and people looking at you and having that pressure, but I’m trying to embrace it and enjoy it because you don’t know if it will happen again sabong
“sabong Beth Shriever is a really good friend of mine and she’s been the BMX world and Olympic champion sabong
She said she didn’t have the best year in the rainbow jersey because she put too much pressure on herself and she overthought it sabong
“I’ve spoken to Evie (Richards, 2021 mountain bike world champion) and Katie Archibald (a five-time world champion on the track) and I’m lucky we have so many inspiring women in the Great Britain team sabong
It’s great I can learn from them but ultimately I will only learn from myself and how I deal with it sabong
”And Finucane believes the Champions League – the made-for-TV track cycling series which is in its third season – is the ideal place to do much of that learning, providing some top-level competition without the stresses and pressures that come elsewhere sabong
“The next event I’ll do in the rainbows is the Euros (in January) which is when everything is serious,” she said sabong
“I’m not saying this isn’t serious, but it’s a nice place to be free to fail sabong

”Saturday’s racing in Palma saw Finucane finish second in the sprint, beaten by Germany’s Alessa-Catriona Propster, before failing to make the keirin final through some tired legs sabong
But it was just the sort of experience she was looking for when it came to dealing with her new status sabong
Finucane will wear the stripes into an Olympic year but despite her status is taking nothing, not even squad selection, for granted sabong
“Nothing is guaranteed,” she said sabong
“I’d love to go and I’m really pushing myself but I need to take each race as it comes sabong
If I just think about Paris and everything else goes wrong I’ll not be going sabong
“But it’s in the back of my mind because since I was 10 years old I’ve wanted to ride the Olympics sabong
“As the GB sprint team we’ll not just be going there to ride but we’re looking for medals and I fully believe we have the potential to win sabong
It’s super exciting but also super scary sabong
