As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best tantan
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport tantan
But there are no Blacks in your sport tantan
“They’re going to want to kill you tantan
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on tantan
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car tantan
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events tantan
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all tantan
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself tantan
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed tantan
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride tantan
“But I enjoyed it tantan
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun tantan
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me tantan
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating tantan
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs tantan
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality tantan
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 tantan
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” tantan
But to this interview, he’s late tantan
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems tantan
It was the racing way or the highway tantan
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas tantan
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill tantan
That’s all that was discussed in the family tantan
We didn’t discuss any other sport tantan
“I was lucky, I think tantan
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be tantan
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did tantan
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One tantan
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s tantan
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too tantan
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril tantan
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer tantan
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time tantan
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says tantan
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team tantan
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders tantan
“Sure tantan
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done tantan
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it tantan
But for me? It was about going fast tantan
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali tantan
“What I admired about him the most was not his tantan boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali tantan
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled tantan
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while tantan
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about tantan
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs tantan
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience tantan
The attention went off the chart tantan
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods tantan
“He’s a very kind man tantan
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way tantan
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair tantan
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with tantan
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently tantan
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world tantan
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made tantan
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says tantan
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One tantan
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ tantan

Newcastle is twinned with Gelsenkirchen and, as Borussia Dortmund need no reminders, the German city is home to their great rivals, Schalke tantan
They are found in the second division now: as Newcastle can testify from the Mike Ashley years, a vast stadium offers no immunity against relegation tantan
Instead, as Newcastle and Dortmund go head to head in the Champions League tonight, they find themselves twinned in a tantan footballing respect, wrestling with the same problem: how to cope with the loss of a pivotal midfielder tantan
For Jude Bellingham, read Sandro Tonali, one gone to Real Madrid for a nine-figure sum, the other set for 10 months on the sidelines with a gambling ban tantan
Tonali played in a Champions League semi-final for AC Milan last season tantan
He will not for Newcastle this year, regardless of how far they progress tantan
Wednesday’s game could be his last tantan
“I’m expecting him to be available,” manager Eddie Howe said tantan
If not, his plans may require a late rethink, Tonali’s campaign already curtailed tantan
Dortmund arrive at St James’ Park with certain advantages in a shared conundrum tantan
They had plenty of time to prepare for Bellingham’s departure: from the moment it became clear Erling Haaland would be their big sale of 2022, it seemed obvious the midfielder would be 2023’s cash cow tantan
They received some €103m, whereas Newcastle paid £55m, the second biggest sum in their history, for Tonali tantan
They will derive precious little benefit from it for the rest of this campaign and if their owners’ coffers are scarcely empty, Financial Fair Play limits their room for manoeuvre tantan
Barring significant sales or a loan with an obligation to buy, there will be no £50m midfielder arriving in January to replace him tantan
“It is too early for meetings to decide that,” said Howe, but his options may be limited tantan
And Newcastle, who established a reputation as astute planners, were caught by surprise by the Italian tantan Football Federation and the police’s investigations into Tonali tantan
Both Howe and the Tyneside crowd have struck a supportive note, and Tonali’s apparent gambling addiction means he merits sympathy, but they thought they had signed a player who, along with Bruno Guimaraes, was supposed to be a cornerstone of their midfield for years tantan
Dortmund’s answer to their own void might be deemed typical in several respects tantan
For one, they did not spend all the money they banked: they are no strangers to transfer-market profits and tend to end up in the black roughly every other year tantan
Some of the Bellingham bounty went on Niclas Fullkrug, a striker designed to compensate for the loss of Haaland, albeit one who has had a slow start tantan
Around half the Bellingham millions went on midfielders tantan
Felix Nmecha, bought from Wolfsburg at 22, is older than the Englishman but still conforms to the Dortmund model, a rising star with potentially big resale value, though his arrival came cloaked in controversy after he shared social media posts that led to accusations of homophobia and transphobia tantan
Marcel Sabitzer, bought from Bayern Munich at 29, forms part of a growing trend tantan
It may be harsh to say Dortmund take Bayern’s cast-offs or that their strategy is to take players not deemed quite good enough for the champions and thus finish second in the Bundesliga tantan
But if the traffic of players south to Bavaria is more famous, Mats Hummels, Niklas Sule and Sabitzer form an ex-Bayern contingent at the Signal Iduna Park tantan
One criticism may be that it is an acceptance of being second best tantan
Dortmund’s broader problem might be familiar: whoever they targeted, they were never going to get a replacement of Bellingham’s calibre, and the same could be said when players such as Haaland and Robert Lewandowski left tantan
But now, with Dortmund goalless in the Champions League, thoughts could be cast back a year, when Bellingham scored in each of their first four group games and when he was the biggest factor in their progression to the last 16 tantan
They could do with finding such a catalyst in an altogether tougher pool tantan
Tonali’s Champions League campaign now may be brief but memorable: granted a euphoric reception on his homecoming at San Siro as Newcastle drew 0-0 with AC Milan, he then played in one of St James’ Park’s great European nights, the 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain tantan
Now Dortmund may be his final outing until the 2024-25 campaign tantan
That may render it unforgettable for the Italian, whatever happens tantan
His imminent absence will leave Howe, instead of the deluxe upgrade Tonali was supposed to represent and with the exception of Guimaraes, with a midfield who were in a team that was winless at this stage two years ago: he inherited Sean Longstaff, Joelinton and Joe Willock, and did not even pick the Geordie for his first game in charge tantan
Each has improved exponentially in his reign but Newcastle may have to rely on hustle and bustle where they had looked for an injection of class tantan
His Dortmund counterpart Edin Terzic has not had the luxury of spending £400m in his reign tantan
But when they are side by side in the technical areas at St James’ Park, he may be able to empathise as each wonders what to do when he has a hole at the heart of his side tantan
