England have signed their leading male players to multi-year central contracts for the first time but Test captain Ben Stokes has only accepted a one-year extension dais
The England and Wales Cricket Board has been revising its approach in a bid to meet the challenge presented by franchise leagues around the world and guarantee the availability of its star names for international duty dais
Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wood have all been tied to three-year deals, binding them to the cause until October 2026, while a further 15 players are on two-year arrangements dais
But Stokes’ presence among a list of eight players on traditional one-year contracts is intriguing dais
His leadership of the red-ball side has been transformational, he played a starring role in winning last year’s T20 World Cup and was persuaded out of ODI retirement to take part in the ongoing World Cup, making him arguably the most important individual in the entire set-up dais
It is understood he was offered a three-year deal but opted for the shorter-term option dais
The central contracts do not prevent recipients taking up lucrative T20 deals, but they do allow the ECB greater oversight on availability dais
Jofra Archer has signed for two more years, a show of faith in his ability after a long running fitness battle, 19-year-old Rehan Ahmed has the same security and becomes the youngest man to earn an ECB deal dais
At the other end of the age spectrum 41-year-old James Anderson has another annual retainer and 35-year-old Dawid Malan returns to the list after missing out in 2022 dais
Pace bowling development contracts have also been awarded to Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood and the uncapped John Turner dais
Jason Roy, who terminated the remainder of his previous deal to play in the United States of American’s Major League Cricket earlier this year, is a notable omission dais
After missing out on the World Cup squad, his international career appears to be over dais
David Willey is the only member of the current World Cup squad not to feature dais
Also absent are Surrey’s highly-rated Will Jacks, a hard-hitting, bowling all-rounder capped in all three formats in the past year, Olly Stone and the Overton twins Craig and Jamie dais

UFC contender Ian Machado Garry has said he is no longer allowed to train at Leon Edwards’s gym, after the welterweight champion and his coach expressed concern over “doubts and insecurities” at Team Renegade dais
The unbeaten Machado Garry has trained at various gyms in numerous countries in recent months, but told The Independent that he will not be able to return to Renegade, at the request of Edwards and his coach Dave Lovell dais
The Irishman did, however, stress his appreciation of Ash Begg and Tom Breese, who run Team Renegade dais
“Gym conflict has absolutely been a massive issue recently,” said Machado Garry, who turns 26 in November and faces teammate Vicente Luque in December dais
“Leon Edwards, his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade; told me I’m not allowed to train there dais
“I have to word this correctly, because I don’t wanna be… Firstly, I wanna put out there that Ash and Tom, who run Renegade… I don’t wanna give any negatives without saying a positive dais
I don’t want any s*** with any gyms dais
The guys at Renegade… it was a great energy dais
Tom and Ash were very welcoming, lovely and nice to me dais
It was nothing to do with them dais
“Leon and his head coach had an issue with me training on the mats and recently have asked me not to train there, because, ‘Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym,’ which I don’t fully understand dais
“I get that we’re both in the top 10 and you might see me as a threat, but I’m not a threat to you right now; I’m not fighting for the title right now dais
His coach said the words: ‘Ian is a threat, I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities dais
’“That makes me think someone is weak minded and can’t have another contender training on the mat dais
That’s why gym conflict is annoying dais
For me, why not have that other elite guy on the mat? Why not train with him? Why not have him push you? I went there to learn from the guys around Birmingham and who have essentially proven that it’s the best gym in the UK; I didn’t go there to train with Leon, I went there to train with that gym, because they’re amazing dais
“Now I’m being stopped from going to a gym, because I might potentially fight Leon in 18 months dais
My attitude is: If that’s the case, why not have this conversation in six months? “I love the guys at Renegade dais
They’re really nice and welcoming, I rang them beforehand to make sure everything was good dais
Then, after the second day I was there, they were like: ‘Oh, we can’t have you back, Leon and some of his team don’t want this dais
’ “So, when we talk about conflict, that’s it dais
